The Rotary Thousand Smiles Project is a special project of Rotary Districts 5340 and 4100, which provides free cleft lip and palate surgery, as well as dental services to the needy in Mexico. It is sponsored by donations from Rotarians and friends.
Cleft lips and palates are the result of multi-factoral reasons including heredity and maternal factors. For best results, cleft lips should be closed when a child is 10 - 12 weeks old. Cleft palates should be repaired at approximately 10 - 12 months of age.
The Rotary Thousand Smiles project provides free cleft lip and palate surgery, as well as facial repairs and dental services to the underserved in Mexico and Third World countries. It is sponsored by Rotarians and friends. All professional services are donated. Medical materials are purchased at an extreme charitable discount. Administrative functions are performed by board members and volunteers at no cost.
These efforts change lives. The children suffering from these deformities are subject to ridicule, in addition to their actual health problems. Many are placed in orphanages; others may not attend school. Through Thousand Smiles Foundation, they receive thorough, comprehensive medical treatment that often entails multiple surgeries over several years.
