WINTER RESTAURANTS TO BE ENJOYED

Winter is upon us and with the season we think of "wholesome foods" and solid warm friendships. Many would think Cape Codders just sit by the fire and count the crests on the ocean waves. This if far from the truth when it comes time to enjoy our hardy winter restaurants and be with long time friends and neighbors. These are just a few of the places where you might just find a friend or neighbor enjoying a hearty evening meal with some local gossip.

Oven Roasted Turkey; Yankee Pot Roast; Meatloaf; Grilled Liver; Fried Chicken; London Broil; Prime Rib; Baked Scallops; Baked Scrod; Old Fashion Apple Crisp; Grape nut Custard...
sounds all American to me and BAYBERRY'S on Cotuit Road in South Sandwich has been serving up this menu for many a year. But I must admit, there have been days of my tastings at four or five restaurants and then it was on to Bayberry's for grilled liver and onions, mash potatoes, peas and for dessert, a double helping of bread pudding. And I couldn't wait to get there. Breakfast and lunch is where you'll find many locals as well as travelers from all parts of the Cape. Just sit at the horseshoe counter, wait a minute, and someone is sure to ask "How's the weather where you live?" When your mouth is watering for "down home cooking" Cape Cod style, this is the place.

Beef Wellington; Pollo Rellano; Beef Tostada; Mexican Pizza; Poached Salmon; Cheese Tortalini; Corned Beef & Cabbage; Seafood Chowder...
can only describe the wide and creative menu at the YARDARM RESTAURANT on Route 28 in Orleans. This is truly the melting pot restaurant, a place where every seasoned local arrives after a sabbatical away from the outer Cape. The lunch and dinner special entrees are varied each day, with a good old fashion creative touch of home cooking. The Corn Beef & Cabbage is a winner, the vegetables are cooked separately so that the entire entree isn't over burdened with salt. Menu items include favorite Mexican entrees which will appease any hardy winter appetite. Great desserts too! The triple layer chocolate and carrot cake will top off the outstanding entrees. I ate them both!

Vegetable Samosas; Chicken & Shrimp a la Zingara; Lamb Curry; Capelli D'angelo; Herbal Linguine; Penne'a la Trattoria...
are just samples of the entrees I embellished and savored at MITCHELS BISTRO at the Mercantile Shopping Center on Route 6 in Eastham. The Chicken & Shrimp a La Zingara sautéed with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, black olives, tomato, herbs and white wine is a house favorite along with the Capelli D'angelo Di Mare - a combination of tomato angel hair pasta with shrimp, scallops and lobster meat sautéed in a herbal garlic butter. These dishes may be just a little rich but who cares, it's a Cape Cod winter! I added this one to my wish list, Penne'a la Trattoria, with spicy Italian sausage, sweet peppers, tomatoes, onions, garlic and fresh herbs tossed with penne pasta.
I must not forget this entree, Nanny's Garden Raviolis filled with cheyre, roasted peppers and artichokes hearts and served with sautéed fresh vegetables and roasted pepper coulis. A must is the Vegetable Samosas, pan fried Indian savory pastries with spicy vegetable filling. The Bistro is open for dinner but you can try Mitchels during the day to meet local outer Cape residents for breakfast and lunch.
P.S. There is a strong influence of Indian cooking here, so you must try some of the Chutney created in house by Mitchel and Roshini.
Breakfast & Lunch - 7 days, Dinner - Wed. through Sun., 508-255-4803

Jerk Pork; Bouillabaisse; Straw & Hay; Saffron Scallops; Garlic Fettucini; Hot Spinach Dip; Blackened Meat Loaf; Sirloin Merlot...
served in the nautical atmosphere of the COURTYARD RESTAURANT & PUB on Route 28A in Cataumet. Having never tried Jerk Pork, I made this my first entree. It consisted of marinated pork tenderloins grilled and served with sweet potato sticks and seasonal vegetables. The Straw & Hay, sausages, prosciutto, mushrooms and peas in a creamy Parmesan sauce served over green and white fettucini is a local favorite, influenced by a combination of Portuguese and Cape Verdean cooking. Try the Saffron Scallops sautéed in a light saffron cream sauce then garnished with bean thread noodles and red peppers served over white rice. Be sure to begin your dinner with the Hot Spinach Dip, a combination of fresh spinach, artichoke hearts, garlic, spices and a mixture of cheese served warm with tortilla chips. Oh yes, the Blackened Meat Loaf is truly blackened in a Cajun seasoning served under a mound of garlic mashed potatoes. Join your friends in the lounge for a bit of gossip about the local fishing in Cataumet. But remember there isn't any need for fish stories here, you'll hear plenty at the bar.

Baby Back Ribs; Crab Cakes; Veal & Shrimp Nantucket; Meatloaf Sandwiches; Fish & Chips; Apple Crisp; Grape Nut Custard; Strawberry Shortcake...
are just a sample of the '95 and '96 award winning entrees of the WESTVIEW RESTAURANT on Route 28 in West Harwich. Just taste the hickory smoked Baby Back Ribs and you'll agree just like I did on my television show, "sweet, succulent and tender." Now on to the Crab Cakes served with lobster sauce, crisp on the outside, moist inside combined with just the right amount of seasonings, crab meat, crumbs and cooked to perfection, as they say in those other reviews. Chef Walter Paciorek has the touch of good olde Cape Cod with both these entrees. At the Taste of Harwich, this restaurant was voted the overall best out of several local restaurants. Once a Victorian home, built in the early 1900's, the Westview still keeps that "homey" Cape Cod feeling for

For those who plan some off Cape holiday shopping along Route 3...
visit one of my favorite regional restaurants, PAISANO'S RISTORANTE at Route 106 & 27 (just minutes off of Route 3 at exit 9) in Kingston. Paisano's is a total non-smoking atmosphere with over 32 outstanding menu entrees. Try the Charcoal Grilled Portabella Mushrooms, topped with garlic butter for starters. Then on to the Antipasto Bar, with Caesar Salads made to order by Chef Carlo. Shrimp and Scallop Fra Diavolo, sautéed with garlic, scallions and mushrooms; Chicken & Shrimp Porto Fino, sautéed in red wine, lemon and garlic; Veal & Shrimp Porto Fino, medallions of veal and two jumbo shrimp sautéed in red wine, lemon and garlic sauce; Beef Braciola, tender flank steak seasoned with garlic, parmesan cheese and pine nuts, then rolled, tied and simmered slowly in plum tomato sauce are some sample menu entrees...all under $9.95. Shopping and excellent dining all in one day.

Other establishments suggested by our listeners and viewers for wholesome, hearty foods that taste like they should: The Chatham Squire, Chatham; Mitchells, Hyannis; The Quarterdeck, Falmouth; Clem & Joes, Provincetown; and the Olde Inn at West Dennis, W.Dennis.

For those wishing to plan dinner parties during the holiday season, may I suggest a visit to Sydenstricker Glass Galleries on Route 6A in Brewster.
